In India, the prevalence of mucormycosis is estimated at 140 per million people, which is about 80 times higher than the prevalence in developed countries.

People get mucormycosis by coming into contact with the fungal spores in the environment. For example, infections involving the lung or sinus can occur after someone breathes in spores.
